Covering a distance of some 200 kilometres and comprised of 47 locks, the canal served no useful military purpose, although commercial traffic made use of the waterway through to the World War I period. The canal is presently used for recreational purposes (R.F. The federal government agency charged with the responsibility for the construction and maintenance of canals in Canada, including the Rideau Canal, has existed since 1879 as the Department of Railways and Canals, and since 1936 as the Department of Transport. In 1972, the administrative responsibility for the Rideau Canal and five other historically significant canal systems was transferred from the Department of Transport to the then National Parks Service.
