Accession consists of records maintained by the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and its precursor, the Division of Mechanical Engineering. The records in this accession were maintained in a vault directly adjacent to the Director's office at the time of the Institute's closure. Directors of the Division of Mechanical Engineering were: Joe Ploeg, E.H. Dudgeon, D.C. MacPhail, and J.H. Parkin.

The files cover various subjects and projects, including NorthStar experimental de-icing aircraft; Steering committee of the Arctic Vessel Research Institute; the Roller Test Rig Building; the Advisory Committee of the Institute for Manufacturing Technology; the Commonwealth Advisory Aeronautical Research Council; UO3 hydrates and the slurry test rig; development of the Canadian Railway Research Program; scientific museum development support; CAD/CAM Technology; the Advisory Board of the Division of Mechanical Engineering; the Board of Directors of NRC Laboratories; Vertical Take-off and Landing Technology (VTOL); arctic submersibles and the transpolar shipment of fuel; the division's discussion of and reaction to the Lamontagne Report and the role of the NRC; specifications for various buildings at the New Annex Laboratories (on Montreal Road); engineering staffing; etc.
Technical drawings, maps, photographs, and objects are included in the occasional file. Photographs include but are not limited to prints relating to: staff retirement and other commemorative events (e.g., Dr. Broughton memorial); VTOL (vertical take-off and landing); long rail welding; the Arctic Vessel and Marine Research Institute facility under construction in 1982; a blood heat exchanger, for cerebral blood; the hydrofoil HD-4; the presentation of the sectioned Sabre engine; proprietary design work. Objects consist of samples of plastic bushings included in a file on vascular structuring instruments, dating from 1957-1968. Technical drawings and maps are numerous; also included is a 1972 design sketch, with overlays, of the D.H.C. Otter by R.G. Williamson.

Arrangement note:

The original order of the records in the Director's vault may have been slightly obscured. In 1993, an archivist visiting the Director's vault described five types of documents in the area: (a) working papers of Dr. Joe Ploeg; (b) Railway Lab files; (c) Files of Dr. E.H. Dudgeon; (d) central registry files; (e) Mechanical Engineering technical reports. Records in categories (a), (b), and (c) were identified for transfer are included in this accession, but are not necessarily organized according to those categories.

The NRC Archives (Sussex Dr., Ottawa) maintains NRC-authored technical reports, including Mechanical Engineering technical reports. Digital copies may be available via the online NRC Publications Archives.

Related material:

Central registry files found in the Director's vault in 1993 were dispatched to the NRC central registry for disposition; some such files may have since accrued to the NRC fonds' central registry system series (Arc. Ref. R1207-18-7-E).
