The Hospital Design Division was created in December 1945 as a consulting and advisory service for the planning and construction of hospitals. Intended to supplement provincial and community planning efforts, the Division reviewed plans submitted by provincial health departments along with their applications for hospital construction grants (part of the National Health Program, initiated in 1948). The Division also participated in the developing of construction standards for hospitals and gave advice to architects and administrative groups on preliminary plans, developed before a formal submission for funding. In the early 1960s, the Hospital Design Division became more involved in consultations relating to health facilities as opposed to buildings strictly defined as "hospitals", and in 1975, the name of the Division was changed to the Health Facilities Design Division. The Division ceased to function in 1990.

The records in this accession consist of material from the registry files of the Division. Subjects include fire protection systems, interstitial space studies, energy conservation for hospitals, hospital evaluation studies for specific institutions across the country, advice and assistance given to the Medical Services Branch for its health care facilities, costs for health facility construction in general, and functional space cost analyses.
