For several years, the NRC had already undertaken various research projects related to the improvement of building materials as well as the betterment of housing construction. Significant work was done on the requirements for structures and Canada's first National Building Code was also completed. With the creation of the division, a more concerted focus was brought to bear on various facets of construction sciences, including lighting, wall construction, insulation, ventilation, strength of materials, vaporization and condensation and modular housing. Over the years the DBR's research dealt with issues concerning construction in the Canadian climate.
