The Ministry of State for Social Development was created by Order-in-Council P.C. 1980-1692 of June 19, 1980. The "super-ministry" was charged with formulating and developing "new and comprehensive policies in relation to the activities of the Government of Canada that affect the welfare of the individual and social development". Composed of three main branches, the Finance and Coordination Branch, the Program Delivery Branch, and the Income Support and Transfer Payments Branch the Ministry was abolished effective September 1, 1984 by Order-in-Council P.C. 3037 of 31 August 1984.
The records in this accession are a series of files relating to the agenda and meetings of a variety of committees relating to social development. The majority of the records relate to the Cabinet Committee on Social Development, the Deputy Minister's Committee and the Social Development Deputies. Other files relate to the activities of the Northern and Native Issues Committee, and the Steering Committee on Administered Prices.
