Accession consists of records created and/or maintained by the Shipbuilding Division of the Department of Transport. Records come from Orange, Blue, and Grey Colour Series assigned by that Division. The Orange Series covers the following ship types: Workboat, Miscellaneous, Motorboats, Surfboats, Search & Rescue Vessels, Tugs, Salvage Vessels, Harbour Craft, Canalboats, Lifeboats, & General Small Vessels. The Blue Series covers Icebreakers. The Grey Series covers weatherships. In many cases, these shipbuilding plans include general arrangement drawings. A general arrangement drawing presents the layout of the ship, rather than detailed drawings of particular components that made up the ship. The records also include specification books for the CCGS St. Stephen, a weathership, an Arctic Patrol icebreaker, and Search & Rescue cutters. It appears that specification books were used to communicate to the shipbuilding company what DoT's construction requirements were for any particular construction project for a ship or class of ship. For example, specification books would discuss the speed at which a ship should run, the hull material, the cargo-carrying capacity, the icebreaking class, etc.
