The Nielson Task Force was a government-wide strategy initiated in the mid-1980's to review government programs with a view to improving service delivery and eliminating duplication. The task force was to prepare a report containing recommendations for Cabinet that would lead to a consolidation of programs, regulations, and delivery mechanisms. The Nielson Task Force sought input from government clients, provinces and the private sector to reform and harmonize provincial and federal level policies.
The material in this accession originated from the Department of Environment's Corporate Services Branch. It contains nine boxes of loose correspondence and binders of background material relating primarily to the Department of Environment's plans and strategies to meet the Nielson exercise. In addition, it includes information on program reviews, staffing, operational plans, and other general subjects.
The files cover administrative information on departmental programs and activities under the Department of Environment's responsibility, such as Environment Conservation Services, Environment Protection Services, Atmospheric Environment Service, and Corporate Planning Services. It also includes program assessment and planning activities within specific branches such as the Canadian Wildlife Service, the Canadian Forestry Service, Parks Canada and the National Battlefields Commission.
