The Hospital Design Division, created in December 1945 as a consulting and advisory service for the planning and construction of hospitals, was intended to supplement provincial and community planning efforts. Under the National Health Program (created in 1948), the Division reviewed plans submitted by provincial health departments along with their applications for hospital construction grants. It also assisted the development of construction standards for hospitals and gave advice to architects and administrative groups on preliminary plans. In the early 1960s, the Hospital Design Division became more involved in consultations relating to health facilities as opposed to buildings strictly defined as "hospitals"; in 1966, it became responsible for the administration of the Health Resources Fund, a 500 million dollar fund dispensed between 1966 and 1980 which assisted the planning, acquisition, construction, renovation and equipping of health training facilities (i.e. schools, hospitals, or other facilities). In 1975, the name of the Division was changed to the Health Facilities Design Division, and it ceased to function in 1990.
The records in this accession consist of working files related to various hospitals construction projects across Canada constructed under the Health Resources Fund. Arranged according to codes denoting the province in which the hospital is located, the files contain project request forms and costs, reports on reviewed drawings, project descriptions, construction reports, memoranda and correspondence offering advice on the projects. Some files include photographs of the construction site9(s), architectural drawings, plans, and photos of models. Also included in this accession are a number of Ledgers for the Health Resources Fund (Box 10).
Related architectural records (aperture cards of plans and drawings for hospitals, clinics, research laboratories, university clinics and research facilities and institutional buildings for medicine, nursing, dentistry and optometry) for the period 1955-1978 are found within the holdings of the Visual and Sound Archives Division under RG 29M, Accession 93-94/001.
