The Policy and Consultation Branch, formerly known as the Policy, Planning and Information Branch, was formed in 1979 from an amalgamation of three previous branches (Policy Research and Long-Range Planning, Health, Economics, and Statistics, and Welfare Infromation Systems). The Branch provides policy analysis and advice on a wide range of social issues and programs with the objective of enhancing the health and welfare of Canadians. The Branch develops and coordinates major policy initiatives and develops and disseminates to the department and the provinces information on health and welfare programs for planning, evaluation, and program management.

The records in this accession consist of miscellaneous correspondence files from the former Long Range Health Planning Branch, Analytical Services Division; many files relate to correspondence with computer data libraries regarding social science data.
