Originally known as the Civil Service or Public Service Health Division, the Occupational Health Services Division of the Medical Services Branch is responsible for the mental and physical health of public servants, providing expert advice on a variety of issues such as employees' mental fitness and the accommodation of persons with disabilities in the workplace. The Division also investigates outbreaks of illness related to occupations, and recommends studies and corrective actions.
The records in this accession are subject files from the Occupational Health Sciences Division's two predecessors, covering: committees (such as the Disability Placement Committee, the Physical Fitness Conference, the Building Safety Committee and the Regional Directors' Conference); consultation and exchange of information with other federal government departments; examination of environmental contaminants (such as arsenic, pesticides, and mercury); employee assistance programs (such as the Rideauwood Institute Alcohol Rehabilitation project); and medical examinations of civil servants.
While the file numbers indicated on the files themselves are from the 8700 file block, internal evidence suggests that these records are from the portions of the Medical Services Branch Central Registry which cover the Civil Service Health Division; see RG 29, volumes 2577-3141 and 3376-3459 for related material.
