Lapierre, Jean, 1956-2016 : Jean C. Lapierre was a lawyer, politician and columnist. He was born on May 7, 1956 in Bassin in the Magdalen Islands. Admitted to the Bar in 1979, he preferred to devote himself to politics and was elected the same year in Quebec in the Shefford riding. In 1984, Prime Minister John Turner appointed him Minister of State for Youth and Amateur Sport. At 28, Lapierre became the youngest cabinet member in the country's history. He remained minister until the September 1984 elections. In 1990, following the election of Jean Chrétien at the head of the Liberal Party, Jean Lapierre left the Liberal caucus. Standing in the House of Commons as an independent MP, Lapierre co-founded the Bloc Québécois with Lucien Bouchard.

Jean Lapierre left Ottawa for Montreal in 1992 and became a political columnist for Montreal's CKAC and then TQS. In 2004, Prime Minister Paul Martin called him back and gave him the riding of Outremont in Montreal. Lapierre later became Minister of Transport. He resigned after less than a year in opposition following the 2006 Liberal defeat. He returned to Quebec and his media career. He became a political columnist on radio and worked for TVA, CTV and CJAD. Jean Lapierre died on March 29, 2016 in a plane crash at the Magdalen Islands.
