It mainly contains documents concerning his position as Minister of National Defense.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Lamontagne, J.-Gilles, 1919-2016 : Joseph Georges Gilles Claude Lamontagne was born in Montreal on April 17, 1919. He studied at the École des Hautes Études Commerciales. He was a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) during the Second World War. His plane was shot down over the Netherlands in 1943, and he was taken prisoner of war until 1945. Businessman in Quebec City after his release, he entered municipal politics in 1962 and was elected Quebec City mayor in 1965. He remained in office until 1977. He was elected as a Liberal MP in the House of Commons in 1977, in a by-election in Langelier district. In 1978, he became Minister of Posts and in 1980 Minister of National Defense. He held this position until August 11, 1983. He left federal politics in 1984 to become Quebec lieutenant-governor, a position he held until 1990. He was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1990.
