The fonds contains the logbook of the SS Diana from Halifax towards Hudson Bay created by John E. Stewart, second mate of the expedition under the command of William Wakeham, dating from June 3rd to September 15th,1897. The expedition was charged by the Canadian government to reassess the span of time during which the strait was free of ice and to assert Canadian rights over Baffin Island and the Arctic Archipelago. This second part of the expedition's mission was fullfilled on August 17th by proclaiming Canadian sovereignty over these territories at Kekerton, Baffin Island.

In the log of the SS Diana one can find the following entry from August 17th, 1897: "Still lying at anchor surveying the Island the British flag hoisted by Commander Wakeham on the highest part of the Island where the settlement was." Also in the log there are references to the dangers that the crew encountered when stuck in the ice in late June and early July and the preparations made in case they had to abandon the ship.

The fonds includes also the logbook of a previous voyage of John E. Stewart to the Caribbean in 1896 (log of the Bessie Louisa).

Stewart, John E., 1861-1941 : John Ernest Stewart, born in the Gaspé in 1861, was second mate in the SS Diana expedition commanded by William Wakeham in 1897, charged by the Canadian government with reassessing the period during which the strait was ice-free as well as asserting the Canadian rights to Baffin Island and the Arctic Archipelago. This second part of the expedition's mission was accomplished on August 17 by proclaiming Canadian sovereignty over these territories at Kekerton, Baffin Island.
John Ernest Stewart had previously served under William Wakeham on the ship La Canadienne and also under his father, Charles, captain of the John Stewart, a seventy-three-ton whaler.
