87 reproductions : photomechanical print.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:The fonds consists of biographical notes, memoirs, correspondence, clippings, and other material relating to Dorothy Cotton's experience as a nurse at the Anglo-Russian Hospital in Russia and at the Coltzea Hospital in Romania on behalf of the Canadian Nursing Mission. It also contains photographic material depicting views of Petrograd (St. Petersburg), Russia, 1915-1917; personnel and activities of the Anglo-Russian Hospital, Petrograd, Russia; and personnel and activities of the Canadian Nursing Association Mission, Bucharest, Romania. In addition, there are three medals awarded to Dorothy Cotton: a Canadian Red Cross Society Medal; an Anglo-Russian Hospital medal dated 1915; and an Alexander Kerensky medal, with inscription in Russian, dated 1917.
The fonds also includes 85 postcards relating to the Hôpital Hotel-Dieu and the Hôpital de la Charité in Lyon; five postcards of scenes during the 1917 Russian revolution, a few of which have Cotton's mss. inscriptions; Russian sites; a set of French "Nos Poilus" cards; British First World War cards; and cards of Finnish, Romanian and Canadian views. It also includes a pre-revolutionary Russian war bonds poster and a 1916 Czarist calendar.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Cotton, Dorothy, 1886-1977 : Dorothy Penner Cotton (know to her family as "Doss") was born on 2 August 1886 in Kingston, Ontario, the daughter of Major-General William Henry Cotton and Jessie Penner. She graduated as a nurse from the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal in 1910. After taking a course at the Quebec Military Hospital in 1914, Cotton enlisted in the Canadian Army Medical Corps as a nursing sister on 4 May 1915. She joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in January of the following year and proceeded overseas with the No. 3 Canadian General Hospital (McGill), initially serving in England and France. In November 1915 she embarked from England as one of a group of 37 destined to serve with the Anglo-Russian Hospital in St. Peterburg. Cotton was recalled in June 1916, but rejoined the hospital for the period January-August 1917. Afterwards she later served in England and Nova Scotia, and was demobilized in 1919.
In 1920 she went to the Coltzea Hospital in Bucharest, Romania, on behalf of the Canadian Nursing Mission, where she and others helped to establish a nursing school. It is not known if she returned to nursing at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. Dorothy Cotton and a friend Elsa May ran a gift shop in Montreal for many years. She died in Montreal on 12 August 1977.Additional information:Custodial history:Dorothy Cotton's memoirs of the Anglo Russian Hospital were presented in December 1916 to Mildred White, who trained in nursing with Cotton and also served overseas in World War I, and who was later head nurse at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. The memoirs and biographical notes (volume 1) were presented in 1984 by the sister of Mildred White, Mrs. C.H. MacLaren of Ottawa, Ont., who was also a nurse.
The correspondence, the clippings and the other material (vol. 2) were presented in 1987 by Barry W. Roxburgh of Ottawa, Ont. Additional material was presented in 2005 and 2014 by William E. Stavert of Montreal, Que.Container note(s):4 : 85 postcards
