Griesbach, William Antrobus, 1878-1945 : William Antrobus Griesbach, lawyer and politician, born in 1878 at Qu'Appelle, Sask., was educated at St. John's College in Winnipeg.

He was called to the bar of the North-West Territories in 1901. In 1905, he was elected an alderman of the City of Edmonton, Alberta, and became mayor in 1907. After a number of previous attempts, he was elected to the House of Commons as a Unionist in 1917 and in 1921 he was appointed to the Senate.

A veteran of the South African War, Griesbach was given command of the 1st Canadian Division's cavalry squadron in 1914. Later that year, he was made Lieutenant-Colonel in command of the 49th Battalion, with which he served in France from 1915 to 1917, when he was promoted to Brigadier-General and placed in command of the 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade. He was promoted to Major-General in 1921. He is the author of Hints to Western Cavalrymen (1913) and I Remember (Toronto, 1946).
