Fonds documents the activities of Canadian University Services Overseas (CUSO).

Fonds consists of textual records: funding and finances; records of the board of directors and executive director's office; project reports and plans; general administration, recruitment and training; CUSO unapproved and discretionary projects and projects funded by other agencies.

Fonds also contains film reels depicting CUSO personnel and activities in Africa, India, Thailand, New Guinea, Malaysia, Borneo and in the Caribbean as well as CUSO T.V. promotions.

Fonds consists of 2 albums of 73 b&w photographs concerning the work of the UNRRA in Poland immediately after World War II.

Canadian University Service Overseas : CUSO was founded in 1961 by Canadian universities and several national organizations as an agency to make plans to send Canadian graduates to developing countries. In the first year, Mr. Lewis Perinbam of UNESCO served as acting Executive Secretary. In 1962, CUSO became an associate committee of the Association of Universities and Colleges. CUSO is funded by universities, governments, business and industry, foundations, private donors and other organizations.

Local CUSO committees established in universities and colleges arrange for publicity and preliminary selection of volunteers. The National Selection Committee then reviews all applications. Overseas CUSO deals directly with foreign governments and agencies, who are responsible for the final selection of applicants. Volunteers have been placed in many countries in Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and South America. The volunteers serve overseas under local conditions of employment. Not all volunteers are recent graduates. Some are retired and in the their 60's and 70's. Volunteers serve in many fields of expertise, for example, teaching, nursing and as doctors and agricultural experts.

General note:

The records were received in 1981 through Mr. A. Brulotte of CUSO headquarters in Ottawa, through Catharine Duff of CUSO in 1984 and through Lyne Lévesque in 1986. Photographs were acquired in 1981 from Anthony A. Swiderski. Films were acquired from Barbara Malone in 1985.
Accession no. 84/330 was arranged and integrated into the fonds in the year 2000.
