Fonds consists of microfilmed material including a letterbook containing copies of letters written by William B. Frue, superintendent of the Silver Islet silver mine from 1871 to 1875; a report on the Silver Islet mine by A.M. Sibley, 1872; a printed historical sketch entitled "Historic Silver Islet, 1868-1885", written ca. 1920 by Janey C. Livingstone; and additional notes concerning the Livingstone sisters. Microfilmed material is located on microfilm reel C-1336.

Silver Islet Consolidated Mining and Lands Company : On 10 July 1868, a small party of prospectors led by Thomas McFarlane of Montreal and John Morgan discovered silver at Silver Islet when they were searching for copper on Lake Superior. The Montreal Mining Company Ltd., who owned the land upon which the silver was discovered, were unable to bear the cost of developing the site which resided predominantly under water. As a result, the rights to the land were sold to an America syndicate led by Major A.M. Sibley of New York, and W.B. Frue of Detroit. They began development of Silver Islet on 1 September 1870. In two years Silver Islet had developed into one of the greatest entreprises on the continent. At the close of one year, for example, the output of the mine was valued at one million three hundred thousand dollars. The company consolidated as the Silver Islet Consolidated Mining and Lands Company and flourished until 1880 at which time its output fell short of its expenses. By 1884 the shaft of the mine had reached 1300 feet below the level of Lake Superior. Following a flood in the same year, the mine had to be closed when a shortage of coal led to the failure of the pumps which kept water out of the mine.
