Fonds consists of the records of the Capitol Theatre, 1939, 1963-1970, including correspondence with various executive offices of Famous Players Canadian Corporation Limited concerning theatre rentals, maintenance and publicity. Fonds also includes booking lists, rental contracts and manager's weekly reports.

Capitol Theatre (Ottawa, Ont.) : The Capitol Theatre was established in Ottawa on November 9, 1920 and was orginally run and operated by Loew's Ottawa Theatres Limited. Loew's Ottawa was part of an eastern canadian chain of Loew's theatres which featured vaudeville acts, photo plays and movies. The 2530-seat cinema was regarded as one of the best cinemas designed by theatre-architect Thomas W. Lamb. Movies shown in the early years of operation were produced by Metro Studios, Loew's producing company. In 1924, the B.F. Keith Company of Canada take's over Loew's Ottawa Theatre. Eventually in 1929, the Keith Company of Canada will merge with the Famous Players Canadian Coporation Limited who will in turn take control of Loew's Ottawa Theatre now named The Capitol Theatre.

The Capitol will have a long time affiliation with Famous Players which maintained the theatre. During its operating years, the Capitol was predominantly a motion picture theatre, although it was also available for temporary occupation by other promoters. As such, the Capitol Theatre was rented out for live theatre productions, ballets, symphonies, cabaret shows, jazz signers, rock bands and for university convocations.

For the most part of its close to fifty years in operation, the theatre was located at 90 Bank Street (corner of Queen street).The Bank Street location ceased operating in 1970 and the building was demolished.
