1 map.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of research notes and material collected or copied by King concerning the history of the Canadian glass industry and used by King principally in writing The History of Glass in Canada. The fonds contains King's outline of the coding systems used in its organization. The research material is comprised of catalogues, extracts from books, correspondence, corporate documents, illustrations and maps from the Dominion Glass Company, other Canadian glass companies and the glass industry in general. It also contains books on the glass industry and King's set of data cards which contain organized information on Canadian glass companies, glass industry personnel and general information.
Fonds also consists of oral history interviews with Canadian glassblowers George Gardiner and George Arthur Shakeley. Gardiner who worked at the Bulington Glass Works in Hamilton from 1885 to 1915, discusses his career, working conditions, glass products and methods of glass production before the advent of mechanization. George Arthur Shakeley reminisces about his career as a glassblower begun at the Roden Broghers Glass Company in Toronto in 1911. He described the methods used to produce tableware, fruit jars, bottles and other commercial glass products as well as whimsical items.
The fonds contains photographs of the Dominion Glass factory in Hamilton, Ont., the Iroquois Glass Co. Ltd. in Quebec, and the Pittsburg, PA factory owned by PPG Industries Ltd. Also includes shots of the archaeological excavation of a glass factory site and photos of L.J. Belnap, Ralph W. Cooper, J.R. Mackenzie, Ian Macdonald, T.B. Dundas, Thomas B. King, A.G. Price, George P. Cole, Thomas W. Bassett, R.W. Dixon, Joe Lerondeau, and George Foster. Photos are by William Notman & Son; Beckett; Nakash; Blank & Stoller; Jean Carman; A.S. In addition, the fonds includes 1926 map showing the names and locations of glass container factories in 70 cities throughout the north-eastern United States, southern Ontario and Quebec.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:King, Thomas B., 1913- : Thomas B. King joined Dominion Glass Company in 1932; he became Assistant Secretary, 1945, Corporate Secretary, 1956, and a director in 1966. He retired in 1978. Mr. King began researching glass history in 1964, initially as coordinator of two centennial projects for Dominion Glass. In 1967 he established Glasfax, an organization for research on Canadian glass and related subjects, and he served as its coordinator until 1978.
