Fonds consists of the papers of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association, n.d., [ca.1844-1939]; and the various member organizations including, Montreal Hockey Club, 1893-1931, 1950; Canadian Amateur Hockey League, 1898-1907; Montreal Football Club, 1872-1930; Montreal Snowshoe Club, 1861-1941; Montreal Toboggan and Skating Club, 1890-1911; Montreal Lacrosse Club, 1876, 1884-1911; Montreal Bicycle Club, 1878-1911; Amateur Athletic Association of Canada, 1883-1894, 1896; Summer Sporting Goods Catalogue of R. & W. Kerr, Montreal, 1906; "Wheelsmen" social club 1936-1942; and Montreal Gymnasium, 1867-1882. The original records are available on microfilm reels H-1865 to H-1879; H-1990 to H-1993.

Fonds also contains three Montreal Amateur Athletic Association Camera Club award spoons, [1908]., Composites are photomontages where large groups of people appear in a photograph together. William Notman perfected the photomontage technique known as composite photography. Notman's photomontages were often social and sporting scenes of up to 300 people. To create the final composite, Notman would individually photograph each sitter in his studio, in the appropriate themed costume, then paste the resulting photograph onto a painted background. The originals were then photographed and sold in various sizes.

Montreal Amateur Athletic Association : The Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (MAAA) was formed as a union of the Montreal Snowshoe Club (founded 1840), the Montreal Lacrosse Club (founded 1856) and the Montreal Bicycle Club (founded 1878), and formally incorporated 20 June 1881 by an Act of the Quebec Legislature. By 1890 there were five affiliated clubs - the original three plus the Toboggan Club and the Montreal Football Club - as well as various "connected" clubs such as the Montreal Hockey Club, the Drama Club, Chess Club, Cinderella Club (a social club), Fencing Club and Boxing Club.

The playing fields of the MAAA, used first for lacrosse and later for football, were among the finest in Montreal. In 1905 when the MAAA moved to its new clubhouse, their original grounds were rented to McGill University and were ultimately sold to the City of Westmount in 1936.

The new clubhouse included a swimming pool, gymnasium, bowling alleys, billiard rooms, a library, apartments, and a dining room. Squash courts and indoor tennis facilities were later added as the MAAA expanded its facilities to meet changing trends in sports. The MAAA still occupies this clubhouse on Peel Street, in the heart of downtown Montreal.

Received in 1983 and 1989 from the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association.

These large composite originals were once on display at the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association in Montreal on Peel Street. At some point during the renovations of the building the composite images were put into storage in a closed room. Each image was wrapped and carefully put into storage but there was no climate control.
