Fonds reflects the organizational structure, activities, conventions and affiliations of the Young Women's Christian Association of Canada.

Fonds consists of national bodies and executive minutes, reports and correspondence; finances; committees; personnel training and leadership development; World Service; Young Men's - Young Women's Christian Association (Y.M.-Y.W.C.A.); seminars and conferences; program material; and songbooks and scrapbooks, 1870-1991.

Fonds consists of memorabilia related to Y.W.C.A. activities and programs, 1973-1975: 1 print; 5 crests and pennants; 1 Woman of Achievement award designed by Lydia Ferrabee. Fonds also includes 2 printing blocks.

Also included in the fonds are sound recordings of proceedings of meetings, talks and centenary celebrations of the YWCA [ca. 1950]-1974. Fonds also include films circulated by the YWCA's film lending library about safety, women's rights, stereotypes, sexuality and sexual assault.

Fonds contains architectural plans by architect Desmond J. Parker of the Y.M.C.A. building in Whitehorse, N.W.T., 1969.

Fonds also contains photographs of Y.W.C.A. meetings, activities, conventions, and projects, 1910-1974.

Young Women's Christian Association of Canada : The Young Women's Christian Association (Y.W.C.A.) was first established in England in 1855. Although the first local Y.W.C.A. in Canada was formed in 1870 in Saint John, N.B., it was not until December 1893 that representatives of five local Y.W.C.A.'s met in Toronto to discuss the formation of a national co-ordinating body. The Young Women's Christian Association of Canada was formed, and a constitution was approved at their annual meeting in January 1895. The purpose of the organization was "to unite in one central body all organizations existing and those to be formed in the future for the purpose of Y.W.C.A. work which is to promote the spiritual, intellectual, physical and social condition of all young women".

The work of the Y.W.C.A. of Canada is administered by the National Board which consists of the executive officers residing in Toronto who are able to meet regularly. The National Council, which consists of the National Board, the presidents of local associations and World's Y.W.C.A. Council members, meets annually in Toronto. National conventions attended by delegates representing the total membership meet every three to four years. The Y.W.C.A.'s concern with the welfare of young women can be divided into two broad areas - individual services and group activities. As well, international affairs have always been a major concern of the Y.W.C.A. of Canada. In 1895, Canada became the fifth national association in the World's Y.W.C.A. which was founded in 1894.
