Fonds consists of the materials collected by Donald Montgomery in the preparation of his study on the problems confronting the brewery workers. These include: constitutions, convention proceedings, 1974-1985, and financial statements (container 1); General Executive Board minutes, local union records, 1974-1985, and the Montgomery report to the 1985 convention (container 2); and newsletters and bulletins, 1974-1983 (containers 2 and 3).

Canadian Union of United Brewery, Flour, Cereal, Soft Drink and Distillery Workers : The Canadian Union of United Brewery, Flour, Cereal, Soft Drink and Distillery Workers was founded at their June 1975 convention. This convention was the result of a two year struggle to create a national brewery workers' union. In November 1973, the International Union of United Brewery, Flour, Cereal, Soft Drink and Distillery Workers of America voted during their Cincinnati convention to merge with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Chauffeurs, Warehousemen and Helpers of America. Voting against this proposed merger were 51 out of 55 Canadian locals, who proceeded to take steps to maintain a separate brewery workers union.

In January 1974, the Canadian locals met at a special convention in Winnipeg and decided to remain independent of the Teamsters and subsequently were able to defeat Teamster efforts to have the merger agreement upheld in court. At the time of their 1975 convention, the brewery workers union represented 56 locals and 11,000 members.

As an independent union, the Canadian brewery workers experienced financial problems and difficulties controlling their local unions. Under the union constitution, the national officers did not have sufficient authority to provide national leadership and prevent local union actions which were detrimental to the union. Local unions were also given the power under the constitution to disaffiliate from the national organization. In 1984, two large brewery locals, local 304 from Toronto and local 325 from Etobicoke, left the union and later became component members of the National Union of Provincial Government Employees. Given their weakened position, the remaining brewery workers voted to merge with the United Food and Commercial Workers Union in January 1986.
