Fonds consists of twenty-five letters and a telegram written by John A. Macdonald to Samuel Amsden, relating to elections and other political matters, 1858-1865. Three letters written by John A. Macdonald to Rolland McDonald of St. Catherines, relating to Amsden, include a subscription list to a banquet in honour of Samuel Amsden signed by a number of prominent political figures of the day, 1861.

Amsden, Samuel, 1820-1867 : Samuel Amsden, born in London, England in October 1820, was a Canadian journalist and editor and proprietor of the "Independent", a conservative newspaper from Dunnville, Upper Canada, from 1857 to 1866. As a public writer, Amsden maintained a respectable position on the newspaper press.

He was also employed in the Customs in different capacities by the Canadian government. Furthermore, he held the rank of Major in the Volunteer Militia.

After a successful career with the Canadian government and as a journalist, Amsden died in Dunnville in 1867.
