Richey, Matthew, 1803-1883 : Matthew Richey, a Wesleyan Methodist minister and an educator, was born 25 May 1803 at Ramelton (Rathmelton), County Donegal (Republic of Ireland). In 1825, he married Louisa Matilda Nichols at Windsor, Nova Scotia and they had five children. Richey, after a rich and successful career as a Wesleyan Methodist minister, died 30 October, 1883 at Halifax, Nova Scotia.

In 1825, Rev. Richey completed his training and education and was admitted into the Methodist ministry. He served on several circuits in the Maritimes before being transferred in 1835 to Montreal in the Lower Canada District. From 1836 to 1840, he was appointed the first principal of Upper Canada Academy in Cobourg, the Methodist coeducational prepatory school that became Victoria College in 1841.

In 1836, Richey returned to the Maritimes, and until his death, played an active part in the development of Methodism in the Canadas.

Richey held the highest position open to him in the Methodist community. Besides supporting close links with the English Wesleyan traditions, he helped foster in British North America Methodism concern for the institutional status for his church. Richey died after a lengthy illness at Government House in Halifax, the official residence of his son, Lieutenant-Governor Henry Richey.
