In 1832 Henry Hulse Berens was sent to the Company's Red River colony where he met Governor George Simpson and was named Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Red River Tallow Company. This company was formed to take advantage of the high price for tallow then existing in Great Britain. However, difficulties in procuring winter fodder terminated the venture in 1833.
Berens returned to England and in the same year in 1833 was named to the Committee of the Hudson's Bay Company. In 1848 he was sent to Washington to sign an agreement settling the Company's claims for compensation concerning the Oregon territories; however, the agreement was eventually abandoned as a result of the opposition of the Foreign Secretary, Lord Palmerston.
In 1856, Berens was named deputy governor and in 1858 became Governor of the Hudson's Bay Company. Berens was approached by Edward Watkin, a representative of Grand Trunk and Intercolonial railway interests, regarding land concessions for a proposed railway and telegraph right-of-way to the Pacific. While unwilling to grant the full extent of these concessions, Berens was prepared to entertain a takeover bid. Accordingly, in 1863 Watkin secured the backing of the International Financial Society which bought out most of the shareholders. Berens was later appointed commissioner of Lieutenancy for London and in 1878 a Director of the Bank of England. He died in 1883 leaving his daughter as heir to the family estate in Kent.Information additionnelle :Note sur les expositions :Exhibition Title: Treasured Memories: 125th Anniversary of the National Archives.
