Fonds consists of correspondence and related papers of James Monk, his male descendants, and their wives. Most of this material concerns James Monk, his sons Sir James Monk and George Henry Monk and George's sons George Henry, Jr., and Samuel Wentworth Monk, and is arranged in files according to the persons who accumulated them. The fonds also includes documents pertaining to George Henry Monk (b. 1783), his wife Jane Pangman, their son George Henry Monk (1822-ca.1870) the Seigneur de Blainville, his wife (and first cousin) Georgiana Henrietta Monk, their seven children and descendants including Seigneurial records, family correspondence, legal records, account books and genealogical notes, 1817-1936.

The following documents are in horizontal storage: posters advertising land in St. Therese and a genealogical chart of the Monk family, container 11, a militia commission for George Henry Monk as Lieutenant-Colonel in the Militia, Halifax, Nova Scotia, container 12, and a Royal Commission appointing Samuel Cornwallis Monk as Puisné Judge of Queen's Bench for Quebec, container 13.

Monk, James (family) : James Monk (ca. 1707-1768) was Assistant-Surveyor of Nova Scotia and a judge of the Superior Court of Common Pleas, 1749-1759, and at various times served as Solicitor General. His son, Sir James Monk (1745-1826) was Solicitor General of Nova Scotia, 1776-1789; Attorney General of Lower Canada, 1792-1794; Chief Justice of Lower Canada, 1794-1824; member of the Executive and Legislative Councils, and Administrator of the province, 1819-1820.

James Monk's brother, George Henry Monk (1748-1823) was First Justice of the Court of Common Pleas of Nova Scotia, 1799-1801, and Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, 1801-1816. His son, Samuel Wentworth Monk (1792-1865) was protonotary of the Court of Queen's Bench at Montreal, 1815-1865, and his grandson George Henry Monk (1822-ca. 1870) purchased the Seigneury de Blainville in 1846. The seigneury remained in the family until the 1930's when the land was subdivided and sold.

A descriptive list of files 1-26 is arranged alphabetically by author and of files 27-31 by date. A file list only is available for volumes 9 and 10, and these volumes are not available on microfilm. General note:

Correspondence and related papers of James Monk and descendants were received in 1959. A few small items were received at various times between 1971 and 1983; further details are available in the finding aid. Records of the Seigneury de Blainville and papers relating to various members of the Monk family, 1817-1936, received in 1981. Volumes 1-8 and the file list for files 1-26 were microfilmed in 1960.

Volumes 1-8 are also available on microfilm, reels C-1451 to C-1453 and C-1463. The file list 1-26 was included in the microfilming of the collection; the file list for volumes 9-10 is not available on microfilm.
