Collection consists of a memorial of James J.P. Holbrook of St. John's Nfld., praying for an ensigncy or other similar appointment, 9 February 1843. Holbrook refers to service of his father and other relatives, and encloses a recommendation by Sir John Harvey, 1843, 8 pages; In addition, there are six letters copied from the first Duke of Wellington's correspondence with his son Charles Wellesley while the latter was in North America, 1838-1840, 1841, as well as copy of a typescript entitled "The Great Duke of Wellington and Canada, 1813-1844", n.d., which contains copies of the above letters, plus copies of correspondence between the first Duke of Wellington and John Beverley Robinson, Chief Justice of Upper Canada, 1844, 36 pages.

Wellington, 1st Duke of, 1769-1852 (family) : Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, British statesman and military officer, served in the British Army in Spain, and commanded the Allied Army at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. He was Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1828 to 1830.
