Fonds consists of a manuscript, n.d., account book, 1840-1843, estate papers, 1866-1868, and bill for duty payable, 1842, 3.6 cm; and five letters written by William Dow Sr. and his children to their cousins at Stanstead, photocopy, 1833-1855, 18 pages.

Dow, William, 1777-1855 (family) : William Dow Sr. (1777-1855) was a tenant farmer at Auchenderren, near Aberchirder, Banffshire, Scotland. With his wife, Margaret Lumsdon (1785-1833), and ten of their eleven children, William Dow immigrated to Canada in August 1832. The Dows spent that winter in Stanstead, Que. with Margaret's sister and then travelled by wagon over the ice at Ogdensburgh, N.Y. to Upper Canada to settle at Whitby.
