Fonds consists of letters to Thomas Joseph Pettigrew, surgeon and antiquary, concerning chiefly Sir Francis Burton's private life, but containing many observations on the Canadian situation, the Canadian people and climate, and on general questions such as the Irish problem and the Catholic issue.

Burton, Francis N., 1766-1832 : Sir Francis Nathaniel Burton, colonial administrator, received his commission as Lieutenant-Govenor of Lower Canada in 1808. He held this commission until his death at Bath in 1832. However, he did not exercise the office as Administrator of the Government until 1824 to 1825, during the absence of Lord Dalhousie.
