Fonds consists of the manifest book of Captain John Homer for 1764 to 1773, lists cargoes, ships, masters, ports and destinations; account of portcharges etc. for the Barque Chancellor in 1866; biographical material concerning the Homer family, including a photograph of J.A.R. Homer and his wife S.K. Wilson.

Homer, John, 1724-1799 : Captain John Homer, shipping merchant, was born in Yarmouth, Mass. in 1724, the son of Benjamin Homer and Elizabeth Crowell. As a young man John Homer moved to Boston where with his brother Benjamin (1731-1776) he established a successful merchant shipping business. The conflict that led to the American Revolution ruined this business and it is likely that John, like his son Joseph (1757-1837), was evacuated from Boston to Halifax by the British. Captain Homer settled in Barrington, Nova Scotia in 1776 and bought out the merchant business his brother-in-law Edmund Doane had established there. John served as Town Clerk from 1777 to 1790.

He married twice, first to Abigail Osborne (d. 1764), and then Hannah Carnes (d. 1786).
