Collection consists of transcripts of letters from Thomas Carleton to Lord Shelburne concerning military and political affairs (1776-1786); a photocopy of a letterbook maintained by Carleton (1788-1795) in his role as Commander of the forces in New Brunswick, and later by his military secretary, Hon. Edward Winslow (1800-1801); a transcript of an entrybook consisting of Carleton's correspondence and related documents (1796-1799); and petitions and documents relating to the governance and settlement of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Island of Saint John (P.E.I.).

Carleton, Thomas, approximately 1735-1817 : Thomas Carleton was the brother of Sir Guy Carleton, Lord Dorchester. He joined the 20th Regiment in 1753 and pursued a military career until named Governor of New Brunswick in 1784. The rank was changed to Lieutenant-Governor in 1786 and he held the office until 1817 although resident in England after 1803.
