Fonds consists of a memorandum book kept by James Gambier, 1793-1822, to record extracts of logbooks, copies of correspondence and various notes regarding naval engagements, with a later entry of 1841. Also included are regulations of the St. Lawrence Steamboat Company. A list of contents prepared by L.D. Cox in 1935 is available, 1.5 cm. In addition, there is a reply of Lord Gambier to questions from the Audit Office arising from an examination of his accounts as Governor and Commander-in-chief of Newfoundland Station, 1807, (6 p.); and a letter of Lady Gambier announcing the printing of an engraving taken from Sir William Beechley's portrait of Lord Gambier, 1809, (1 p.).

Gambier, James, 1756-1833 : James Gambier, 1st Baron Gambier, joined the Royal Navy at age eleven and rose to the rank of Admiral. He served as Governor of Newfoundland, and Commander-in-Chief of Newfoundland Station, 1802-1803.

General note:

The memorandum book and the regulations of the St. Lawrence Steamboat Company were acquired from the Robert Wilson Reford estate in 1974. The reply of Lord Gambier to questions from the Audit Office was acquired, in 1962, from H. P. Kraus, dealer in rare books, manuscripts and maps, New York. The letter of Lady Gambier was acquired, in 1971, from J. J. Enders, dealer in rare manuscripts, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
