Transcripts copied in 1917 from original correspondence, then part of the estate of Senator William Johnson Almon, MD. These transcripts were microfilmed in 1984, reel H-1564. Originals of material on microfilm reels M-6520 and M-6521 are held by the Massachusetts Historical Society and were also microfilmed in 1984.

At the death of Catherine Byles in 1837, the possessions and papers of Catherine and her sister Mary, were sent to her niece Rebecca (Mrs. William J. Almon). The rest of the correspondence was sent to Mrs. Almon directly. At Mrs. Almon's death the material was given to Senator William Johnson Almon. MD. On his death the original letters were divided among his heirs and were scattered. The National Archives copied the material in 1917. The letters that were still in Canada were copied first and then the letters in England. This accounts for the numbering of the letters, with the letters from England being interleaved later according to date.
