Item consists of a journal kept by Thomas Porter describing preparations for a trip to Canada and the daily routine of his stay in Quebec, dated 1 January 1811 to 25 December 1812. Although Porter was involved with the iron and steel trades, his diary, which was prepared for his wife, focuses principally on social life in the city.

Porter, Thomas, 1776- : Thomas Porter lived in Birmingham with his wife Anne and family when he was sent to Canada on business in 1811. Porter resided in Quebec from 10 July 1811 until early November 1812, with a brief visit to Montreal. He took legal actions on behalf of Birmingham merchants, Joseph Shore, George & Mathias Attwood, to recover money owing to them.
