Fonds consists of the following documents: extracts from a journal kept by Lt. John Marr, R.E., during a journey from Halifax to Lunenburg, N.S., July 1763 (1 microfilm reel, A-575); a letter from John Marr to Lord Cathcart, regarding his third project for the Citadel at Quebec endorsed the same day by Cathcart for the attention of Lord Dartmouth, 9 April 1773 (3 pages); and "Remarks on Lieutenant John Marr's Project No 3 for a Citadel at Quebec...", unsigned but apparently in Marr's hand, ca. 1771 (8 pages).

Fonds also includes two accompanying maps (Proposals 3 and 4).

Marr, John, d. 1786 : John Marr, a native of Scotland, began his career with the Royal Engineers in 1757. He was posted at Quebec from 1769 to 1779, then he returned to Great Britain. Promoted to the rank of Major in 1783, he spent his last years in Scotland on the invalid list.

General note:

The Journal was microfilmed in 1962 from original then held by the Royal United Services Institution and now in the National Army Museum, England.
The two accompanying maps (Proposals 3 and 4) have been catalogued in themCartographic and Architectural Archives Division H3/340/Quebec/(1771) andm1773.

Citation/reference note:

Some appreciation of Marr's work on the fortifications of Quebec is to be found in "Québec, Ville Fortifiée du XVIIe au XIXe siècle" (Editions du Pélican, 1982).
