Fonds consists of the accounts of the Northern Department, 1817-1834; letterbooks of Michilimackinac and Sault Ste. Marie kept by Gabriel Franchere, 1803-1838; and New York office records commencing with the presidency of Ramsay Crooks, 1827-1855. New York office records, Michilimackinac, and Sault Ste. Marie records are located on microfilm reels: M-35 to M-59, M-89 to M-105.

American Fur Company : The American Fur Company under its founder John Jacob Astor extended operations as far as the Columbia River on the Pacific coast. In 1834 the company was purchased by Ramsay Crooks and associates. Its active operations ceased in 1847.

General note:

Nothern Department Records, 1817-1834, were received in 1914.
Michilimackinac and Sault Ste. Marie records 1803-1838, were microfilmed in 1950 from originals held in the Burton Historical Collection.
New York office records, 1827-1855, were microfilmed in 1950 from originals held by the New York Historical Association.

Originals are with the Burton Historical Collection, Detroit and the New York Historical Society.
