1 photograph : b&w.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:The fonds consists of a diary of the journey of No. 7 Company, Ontario Rifles from Lake Shebandowan to the Rainy River and a stay of three weeks at Fort Frances, 1870; correspondence from Kerr to his father, and to Kerr from the Governor General, 1869-1870, 1940; and miscellaneous documents, including notes on the investigation and trial of Ambroise Lépine, an account of the execution of Thomas Scott by John Bruce, and reprints of articles by John Kerr on the Indian treaties of 1876 and Gabriel Dumont, 1874-1937.
The fonds also consists of a portrait of Kerr at the age of eighteen.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Kerr, John Andrew, 1851-1940 : A native of Perth, Ontario, John Kerr enlisted in the Ontario Rifles for the Red River Expedition. When discharged by the army in 1871, he remained in the West. He spent two winters hunting with the Métis band of Gabriel Dumont and was one of the constables that arrested Ambroise Lépine on a charge of murdering Thomas Scott. In 1876 he acted as a guide and witness for officials charged with arranging Indian Treaty Number Six. He engaged in farming and railroading in Dakota from 1883 until 1889 when he returned to Perth.
