Peers at Peel River, 1847-1853, with accounts for 1848 and 1851-1852. The journals record the trade and relationships between the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) and local people, events that happened (e.g., inter-ethnic conflicts, disease, and starvation), ecological concerns (e.g., over-harvesting), and observed cultural practices. The content includes references to the Tetlit Gwich'in, Vuntut Gwich'in, Sahtu (Northern Slavey), and Inuvialuit. August R. Peers passed away March 15th, 1853 following illness. His wife, Christina Bell, wrote the entry for that day and was likely the scribe of the journal entries from 2 August 1852 to 31 May 1853. She may also have contributed to other journals.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Fort McPherson (N.W.T.) : Fort McPherson (also known as Tetlit Zheh) was built in 1840 on the Peel River near its outlet. At this time, it was called Peel's River House until it was renamed Fort McPherson in 1849 after the name of the town nearby.Additional information:Source of title:Title assigned based on the title of the journals and the name used at the time (1847-1853). At this time, the post was called Peel's River House. After 1849, the name changed to Fort McPherson.Custodial history:Received in 1929 from W.
