Fonds consists of contemporary copies of Finlayson's diary, entitled 'Jottings on the March from Fort Garry to Rocky Mountains, 1874,' recording the expedition from Fort Garry to Fort Macleod, 9 June to 28 November 1874, and the poem 'Song of the Mounted Police.' Also included in the fonds is a modern typescript copy of the diary.

Finlayson, James, fl. 1873-1876 : James Finlayson joined the North West Mounted Police on 3 November 1873. As a member of 'B' Troop, he took part in the march west from Fort Garry to Fort Macleod during the following year. He was discharged from the force on 3 November 1876 as time expired.

General note:

The contemporary copy of the diary and poem were received in 1967, from Mr. Clarence Halliday of Cobourg, Ontario. The typescript copy of the diary was produced and received from the Winnipeg office of the Canadian Parks Service in 1990.
