A collection of 31 funeral invitations (21 in French and 10 in English) mainly for Montreal, 1790-1856. There is one for Quebec, 1833, and another for Terrebonne, 1847. A few of the invitations are complete, with the name of the person invited on the back, but most have been cut out and pasted onto loose pages. There are indications that the collection, perhaps made by John Mappin of Montreal, was assembled because of the collector's interest in the printing. The information afforded by the invitations often includes the maiden names of deceased women. Originals, 40 pages.

Montreal (Quebec). Funeral Invitations : Funeral invitations were usually printed and sent to relatives and friends to inform them of the time and place of a funeral. They normally supplied either the address from which the funeral procession would start or the place of burial, and occasionally both. Since the sending of such invitations depended on very quick service from a printer, the practice was for the most part confined to well-to-do families in the larger population centres, with friends and relatives scattered, but within a limited area. The custom died out in the mid-nineteenth century and was replaced by the practice of sending notices to the daily newspapers.
