Baker, Edwin Albert, 1893-1968 : Lieutenant-Colonel Edwin Albert Baker, army officer and executive, was born in 1893 at Collin's Bay, Ont. He obtained his B.Sc. in electrical engineering, 1914, from Queen's University, Kingston, Ont. In addition to serving in the Canadian Militia, he served in the field of combat during the First World War and suffered eye wounds. He was awarded the Military Cross and the Croix de Guerre. He trained at St. Dunstan's Hostel for Blinded Soldiers.

He was one of the chief organizers of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind which received its charter in 1918. He served the Institute as first Vice-President, 1918-1920, Managing Director and General Secretary, 1920-1962, and was named Honourary President in 1962. He headed numerous associations, some of which were the World Council for the Welfare of the Blind, American Foundation for the Blind, War Pensioners' Association of Canada, Soldier Aid Committee of Ontario, Canadian Conference of National Voluntary Health and Welfare Organizations.
