Fonds consists of a memoir entitled, "Ghost Town 1934 to 1954" in which Popkie describes his life as a child growing up in the isolated mining town of Black Donald in Renfrew County, Ont. His father and most men of the town worked as miners for the Black Donald Graphite Ltd. The mine which was North America's largest graphite mine operated from 1895 to 1954, when the ore ran out. Mr. Popkie describes the mill, homes, church, school, and social life in Black Donald. Many miners supplemented their income with farming and trapping. There is also a two page article from the Renfrew Mercury of 13 August 1986 on the erection of the Ontario Heritage Foundation plaque in memory of the mine.

Photographs, 1986, depict the unveiling of the Ontario Heritage Foundation's Plaque, commemorating Black Donald Graphite Mine, Renfrew County, Ont., 3 Aug. 1986, including individuals (L.-R.): S.F. Wise, Rita Quilty, Howard Popkie, and various containers in which Black Donald Graphite was sold. There is also a portrait of Howard Popkie as a soldier in the 3rd Battalion of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry on the Jamestown Line in Korea taken in 1952.

Popkie, Howard, 1934- : Howard Popkie lived in Black Donald, Renfrew County, Ont. where his father was a miner in the Black Donald Graphite Company Mine. During the Korean War he joined the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and served in Korea.
