Fonds consists of photocopies of transcripts of letters received by John Philip Lautenschlager in Herchenrode, 1830-1833, from friends and relatives who had immigrated to Ohio, Pennsylvania and Upper Canada. The letters describe the adjustment of the immigrants to conditions in America. Also included are photocopies of letters, 1929-1933, relating to the preparation of the transcripts and of letters, 1946-1947, on post-war conditions in Germany.

Lautenschlager, John Philip (family ) : John Philip Lautenschlager, born in 1809 in Herchenrode, Germany, was the first of his family to immigrate to British North America. He settled in Preston, Upper Canada, 1833. His letters home, as well as correspondence from other relatives and friends who had left for America, were saved by his father, John Philip Sr., who, in 1833, left Herchenrode for Ohio, largely because of the favorable reports he had received from there.

The correspondence remained in Herchenrode where it was discovered by Stanion Lautenschlager in 1926, during a visit with relatives. Earl Lautenschlager made arrangements while visiting Herchenrode in 1937 to have the letters transcribed. The transcripts were received in Canada in 1933, and presented by Stanton, Roy and Earl Lautenschlager to their father, Isaac, as a Christmas gift.
