She immigrated with him to Upper Canada in 1832, first settling on a farm near Cobourg, later moving to Douro township and, in 1839, to Belleville, where Mr. Moodie was appointed sheriff. He died there in 1869. Susanna Moodie began writing in England and continued her literary career in Canada, where she was a regular contributor to the Literary Garland, published by John Lovell in Montreal. She was the author of the study of Canadian pioneer life Roughing It in the Bush (1852) and its sequel Life in the Clearings (1853), as well as a number of sentimental novels.
Among Mrs. Moodie's children were Katie, who married John Vickers of Toronto, and Agnes, who married Charles FitzGibbon and was the joint author with her aunt Catharine Parr Traill of Canadian Wild Flowers (1860). Mrs. Traill, a sister of Susanne Moodie who also married a half-pay officer and immigrated to Canada, was the author of many publications, including The Backwoods of Canada (1836), The Female Emigrants' Guide (1854) and Studies of Plant Life in Canada (1885). Their brother Samuel Strickland also settled in Canada and wrote about his experiences, and three sisters remaining in England, Jane, Elizabeth and Agnes, were authors as well. Susanna Moodie died in Toronto at the home of Katie and John Vickers.
