Fonds consists of personal papers and records arising from William Eklund's involvement with the Archives and History Committees of the Finnish Organization of Canada; records arising from William Eklund's other organizational activities respecting the National Office, Central Ontario District Committee, and Sudbury Local No 16 of the Finnish Organization of Canada, The Finnish Senior Citizens Club of Sudbury, Inc. and Vapaus Publishing Company Limited, n.d., 1912-1985.

The fonds also contains audio interviews of Finnish Canadians resident in the Thunder Bay area done for the Multicultural History Society of Ontario, 1977-1979; and copies of photographs originally taken from [1895-1960] of Finnish immigrants in Canada.

Eklund, William, 1906-1985 : William "Bill" Eklund was born in Pori, Finland and immigrated to Canada in 1922. He first found employment in the construction industry in Toronto and later in the bush camps of Northern Ontario. In 1932, he became an office assistant in the Finnish Organization of Canada's national office in Toronto, and later served as its district organizer in the Timmins-South Porcupine-Kirkland Lake and Thunder Bay regions. In 1937, Eklund joined the editorial staff of the Finnish newspaper, Vapaus in Sudbury and in 1940 he was promoted to Editor-in-chief.

With the exception of his term of service with the Canadian Armed Forces in 1943-1944, Eklund held the post of editor at Vapaus (renamed Viikkosanomat following its merger with Liekki in 1974) until his retirement in 1975. Eklund served nearly four decades on the National Executive Committee of the Finnish Organization of Canada. As well, he had been active in the affairs of the local community in Sudbury. In his work as playwright, author and translator, he is probably best remembered for his Canadan rakentajia: Canadan Suomalaisen Jäjestön historia vv. 1911-1971 (Toronto: 1983), history of the Finnish Organization of Canada.

William Eklund died in Sudbury in 1985.
