Fonds consists of correspondence, clippings and articles by Rabbi Horowitz in English and Hebrew relating to his educational work on behalf of the Zionist Organization of Canada in Western Canada in the 1940's; his service as national director of the Canadian Association for Hebrew Education and Culture, 1946-1949 and 1955-1964; his work on behalf of the Katznelson Institute for Higher Learning in the United States, 1949-1951; and as Dean and Administrator, Herzliah Hebrew Teachers Institute in New York, 1964-1966. Correspondence relating to the publication of and comments about his book Striking Roots, 1977-1983, and general personal correspondence, 1933-1985, (volumes 1-4).

The fonds also contains sound recordings relating to interviews of prominent members of the Canadian Jewish community as well as photographs depicting Rabbi Horowitz at various functions and events.

Included in horizontal storage: a "Chronological Chart of Zionism", container 5.

Horowitz, Aron, 1911- : Aron (Aaron) Horowitz, rabbi and educator, born in Safad, Israel, came to Canada in 1926. He served as Executive Director of the Zionist Organization of Canada, Western Region; and supervisor of Hebrew schools in Western Canada, 1939-1942. He was educational director of the Calgary Hebrew School, 1942-1946, and 1952-1955. He served as National Director of the Canadian Association for Hebrew Education and Culture, 1946-1949, and 1955-1964. He was founder and director of Camp Massad of Canada and the National Leadership Institute for Youth, both affiliated with the Canadian Zionist movement.

Rabbi Horowitz served as Assistant Registrar, Hebrew University, Jerusalem, 1936-1938; Dean, Herzliah Hebrew Teachers Institute, New York, 1964-1966 and Head of the Secondary Education Dept., Board of Jewish Education, New York, 1966-1967. A strong proponent of Zionist and Hebrew education in the Diaspora, he has written extensively in Hebrew, English and Yiddish on Judaic and educational subjects in various newspapers and periodicals. He has authored two books, Striking Roots: Reflections on Five Decades of Jewish Life, 1979; You Can Be Your Own Rabbi: A Comprehensive Guide to Jewish Thought, Law, Custom and Way of Life, 1985.
