Fonds consists of records that document the life and career of labour leader William Kearns. The files include records of his work with the Toronto Labour Council, his work with Toronto-area service organizations, files on various unions and organizations, and personal matters.

Records include minutes, correspondence, photographs, publications and printed matter.

Kearns, William D., 1896-1969 : William D. Kearns was born and educated in Peterborough, Ontario. In 1934, he was instrumental in establishing the Beverage Dispensers Union. He was elected secretary-treasurer of Local 28 of that union and in 1954 was made a life member.

In 1943, Kearns was elected an executive officer of the Toronto District Trades and Labor Council. Subsequently he served as the Council's Vice-President for three years and Secretary-Treasurer for four and one half years. Between 1951 and 1968, Kearns was the labour representative on the executive of the Community Chest of Greater Toronto and later on the executive of the United Community Fund. He died in 1969.
