The fonds consists of textual records and photographs of Rev. Walter G. Brown. It holds the following series of textual records: correspondence with Prime Ministers Sir Wilfrid Laurier (1917-1918) and W. L. Mackenzie King (1932-1933); diaries and notebooks describing Brown's work as a minister in western Canada, as Moderator of the Presbyterian Church, and his political career (1907-1940); and subject files, including a scrapbook and sermons used in Rev. Brown's various careers (1870-1979).

The photographs date from 1896 to 1932 and depict Rev. Brown with various members of his congregations at Red Deer, Alberta, and New Denver, British Columbia; with Mrs. Brown in Formosa (Taiwan), 1932; and portraits of him as a student.

Brown, Walter George, 1875-1940 : The Reverend Brown was born in Atholston, Quebec on 6 September. After studies at Huntingdon Academy, he entered McGill University where he received a B.A. in 1899, a B.D. in 1902 and M.A. in 1904. His M.A. thesis topic was the History and Philosophy of Socialism. In 1907 he studied theology at the United Free College in Glasgow, Scotland. He began his ministry in 1902, first working as a missionary in the lumber camps of Northern Ontario and then transferring to B.C. lumber camps where he stayed until 1907. In 1907 he accepted a call to Knox Church in Red Deer, Alta where he worked for 17 years.

During the 1920s Reverend Brown became a leader of the nonconcurrents on the question of Church Union. He travelled widely speaking against Church Union. After the United Church of Canada was formed, he left Red Deer to help one hundred continuing Presbyterians in Saskatoon form a new church, St. Andrew's. In 1931 he was elected Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Canada.

The Reverend Brown had always been interested in social welfare and became quite active in the field in the 1930s making numerous speeches and broadcasts. He was nominated a candidate for the United Reform Party for Saskatchewan and was elected in 1939 and 1940. However, he only sat in the House of Commons one day as he died 30 March in Ottawa.
