Fonds consists of the following series of textual records: correspondence files primarily relating to the Canadian Chess Federation (1920-1978); subject files that feature the minutes and constitutions of the Montreal Chess League (1879-1978), the Chess Federation of Canada (1874-1978), and match results (1922-1974); and newspaper clippings (1856-1978).

Fonds also contains a wide variety of photographs documenting both the Canadian chess scene (especially in Quebec), as well as parts of the international scene (France around the turn of the century, Britain during the "twenties") Fonds includes photographs depicting the Quebec Provincial Chess Association Championship of 1947, 1948; Living Chess, Winnipeg, Man., 1932; members of various chess clubs; groups with touring chess personalities, such as Alekhine in Montreal, 1923.

LeDain, Dudley, 1901-1978 : Dudley LeDain was an active promoter of chess playing in Canada from the 1920's until his death in 1978. He won the chess championship of Montreal in 1924 but his greatest contributions to Canadian chess were his organizational and journalistic work. Le Dain wrote a chess column for the Montreal Gazette and Saturday Night magazine. In the mid 1930's he edited the Canadian Chessner, the official organ of the Canadian Chess Federation. In 1956 he served as Tournament Director for the first Canadian Open Chess Championship. Le Dain was the Montreal Chess League Tournament Director and arranged many Grand Master tourneys and exhibitions. Later in life Le Dain began researching a "Canadian Chess History" book which was never completed.
