Bosyæi, Volodymyr, 1899-1979 : Walter J. Bossy, teacher and community leader, was born in Jaslo, Galicia. In 1924 he immigrated to Canada and became active in the Ukranian community of Toronto as an editor and organizer. Shortly after his arrival, he founded the Ukranian Sporting Sich Association of Canada, a society with a Hetman (Ukranian monarchist) ideology stressing nationalistic and physical training objectives. This society later became the nucleus of the United Hetman Organizations, a Canada-wide federation of similar societies. In 1925 Bossy taught at St. Joseph's College in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, and the following year was editor for a short time of the Catholic organ, Kanadiys' kiy Ukrainetz' (Canadian Ukranian).

In 1931 Bossy moved to Montreal, becoming in 1933 a teacher in the Montreal Catholic School System and, three years later, an advisor and liaison officer regarding children of immigrants. He resigned in 1949 but was reinstated as a teacher in 1958 and returned in 1961.

Bossey's other activities among new Canadians included the organization of an Allegiance Day, 1938, attempts to harness the ethnic vote for various political parties including the Classocracy League of Canada which he helped found in 1935, and the provision of immigrant aid services through his own New Canadian Service Bureau (est. 1947). In the 1950's, Bossy was active before the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism and two years later attempted to organize a multicultural council for the Montreal area, the Institute of the Canadian Ethnic Mosaic Confederation. An ardent Roman Catholic, Bossy was involved in various movements within the Church.
